The kidneys are referred to as the Root of Life that stores the original Qi and transmutes essence, determining our level of health throughout the stages of life. The kidneys govern pregnancy, birth, growth, puberty, fertility, menopause, aging, and death.
In the Five Element Theory of Chinese Medicine, the kidneys grasp the Qi to assist the lung in directing the Qi downward. The kidney is associated with the Water element which regulates the balance of fluids, sends turbid liquids down, and recycles clear fluid back into general circulation. The Yin organ of the kidney meridian has a common imbalance of brittle bones, weak knees, loose teeth, premature aging, poor sperm/egg quality, infertility, poor memory, hair loss, lack of vitality, lower back pain, and dark eye circles to name a few.
The therapeutic approach focuses on determining if the kidney deficiency comes from a genetic predisposition to a weak kidney essence or those who have a strong kidney essence but have burned themselves out. Any factors can contribute to the weakening of the kidney's energy, such as chronic stress, overwork, late nights, and go-go-go lifestyle.
Kidney energy peaks at 5pm - 7pm, which is when the kidney meridian is on duty. This is the time for:
△ restorative yoga/qigong
△ have a rest
△ massage/light walking
△ have a smaller healthy dinner
Practices to nourish your kidney Qi: To support the kidney essence, proper nutrition with little salt intake helps to nourish the kidneys, ensuring to take time out to rest and not to do anything excessively including work or exercise, which means having a focus on restorative yoga and Qigong will support the kidney essence.
