The small intestine's function is to separate the pure from the impure, converting food and liquids into nutrients while passing waste to the large intestine and urinary bladder.
In the Five Element Theory of Chinese Medicine, the small intestine is associated with the Fire element. The Yang organ of the small intestine meridian has a common imbalance of bloating, gas, and abdominal pain when nutrients are not properly assimilated.
The therapeutic approach focuses on purging and clearing the small intestine meridian in Summer or if there is an imbalance in properly digesting food which can cause distention in the lower abdomen, appendicitis, and mental restlessness. Another factor that affects the small intestine is being aware of whether you have positive or negative thoughts that can turn into positive or negative emotions.
Small intestine energy peaks at 1pm - 3pm, which is when the small intestine meridian is on duty. This is the time for:
△ digest food
△ take a nap to reset your energy
△ daily task/exercise
△ take a walk
Practices to nourish your small intestine Qi: Ensure you drink enough water during the day as it can cause dehydration during the small intestine hours. When food is eaten earlier, it gets to complete digestion and assimilation during this time. When it clogs up the small intestine with undigested food, it can cause mental restlessness, vulnerable thoughts, and even feelings of abandonment.
The key to nurturing your small intestine Qi is to have a smooth flow of energy in the small intestine meridian and the suggested practices that I created this month in the Online Healing Studio is specifically to help Yang Sheng for your small intestine meridian.
