The triple burner (also called triple warmer) is not a physical organ itself but according to Chinese Medicine, it coordinates and communicates energy between all the organs to maintain health. The triple burner is divided into three burners, upper burner (above the diaphragm), middle burner (between navel and diaphragm), and lower burner (below the navel). Its function is to transmit Original Qi that is stored in the kidney to harmonise the energy system. The triple burner regulates the endocrine, immune system, and temperature in the body.
In the Five Element Theory of Chinese Medicine, the triple burner is associated with the Fire element which is paired with pericardium meridian and is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi throughout all the meridians. When the upper burner is out of balance, it leads to a breakdown of our defenses resulting in a cold, sneezing, runny nose, temperature, sore throat, and body aches. When the middle burner is out of balance, it can impact digestive issues like bloating, nausea, and heartburn. When the lower burner is out of balance, it can lead to problems with water retention and urination, such as leg edema, burning urination, loss of bladder control, and frequent urination.
The therapeutic approach focuses on harmonising energy in the triple burner meridian in Summer or during 9 - 11 pm in the triple warmer meridian clock, or if there is an imbalance as mentioned above.
Triple burner energy peaks at 9pm - 11pm, which is when the triple burner meridian is on duty. This is the time for:
△ calm the nervous system
△ listen to relaxing music
△ light reading
△ sleep
Practices to nourish your triple burner Qi: When your system is out of whack, your energy is not harmonised. One of the most important and often understated is having a good night's sleep and sleeping according to your body clock so that all the organs can be replenished. It is essential to prepare for sleep so that you won't be wired up before bedtime and struggle to fall asleep. Instead of checking your emails, social media, or watching TV. Think of it as a ritual just like when you go to a beautiful spa, creating an environment that will relax you. Some suggestions are to prepare at least 30 mins before you go to bed, put on a diffuser with your favourite essential oils (my favourite is lavender and eucalyptus), have a foot bath (use herbs or few drops of peppermint essential oil), listen to soothing music and feel free to get creative to create your own sanctuary for sleep.
The key to nurturing your triple burner Qi is to have a smooth flow of energy in the triple burner meridian and the suggested practices that I created this month in the Online Healing Studio is specifically to help Yang Sheng for your triple burner meridian.
